Final performance evaluation

Today we had our choreography assessment where we performed our final piece. I was really pleased with how our performance turned out and I feel we all maintained our facial expressions and dynamics throughout. To begin with we were given the time to run through our piece which I found helpful as it allowed me to prepare myself for the final performance and apply any corrections that I needed to apply. Now it was time to perform our dance, so we had to make sure we gave it our all performing to the best of our abilities keeping a strong and energetic dynamic throughout. During our performance I did not feel as tired as I normally do when we perform our piece. Whilst in previous rehearsals I have felt that my energy has lacked a little bit towards the end , however today I felt that I managed to keep up my energy right until the end. I feel this was because I had built up a lot of adrenaline and excitement prior to our performance so I was therefore able to keep up my stamina. I fe...

evaluation - choreography lesson 10

In today’s blog I will discuss and evaluate our group choreography as a whole and the process of creating our choreography. The main message we wanted to portray within our dance is the different characteristics of the people living inside a mental asylum and how at times they feel trapped, struggling to find freedom desperately trying to escape negative hole they are buried in. We also wanted to show how these patients struggling with mental illness are humans and do have emotions, as you will see towards the end of our piece where the music becomes a lot softer and we portray a sad emotion. At the beginning of our process we wanted to use the picture of the deserted corridor as one of the starting points for our dance. To begin with we went a bit of track forgetting about our main starting point, however after some discussions and thinking we decided to go back to this picture, presenting it at the very beginning of the piece where we make our entrance into the mental asylum. We a...

choreography - comparison between works week 9

Within this blog I will review and compare a section of work from each of the two choreographers’ in which have been an inspiration towards us when creating our piece. The first choreographer we have chosen is James Wilton. The work that I will be looking into is “The shortest day” which is based upon psychological effects on people when they know they do not have much time left. The 4 dancers are struggling to survive, hurting themselves and others willing to find hope in a hopeless world. The dance begins a male dancer standing still facing stage left. Gently the dancer falls to the floor, and three dancers are seen walking in the darkness with one arm out to the side. Suddenly a burst of light fills the stage to reveal the 4 dancers, the dancers run around in circles with one arm to the side and every now and then a dancer breaks free to perform a motif. The movement is grounded and there is real focus on the curve of the spine and use of arms. When I watch this, I almost feel th...

Choreography lesson 9

Image
In today’s lesson we began by reviewing the feedback we received from our teacher based upon our choreography some of the points we were given included: • During the triangle section try to find more ways to build movement so it becomes more exaggerated throughout, for example certain actions could be a lot sharper and deeper , we also need to ensure that we are all doing the same thing and if someone is doing something different intentionally we need to make it more obvious in order for the audience to not get the impression someone has gone wrong • Throughout the piece use more breath and make sure to maintain our characters. • Now we need to start rehearsing full out every time as the performance quality, facial expressions and intensity of movement is vital to the piece. From this we began to work on our feedback by going through our dance slowly and applying any corrections we had been given. We made sure to go through every section in detail to ensure that we all knew what ...

Lesson 8 choreography

Image
In todays lesson we continued on with our group choreography creating more material, focusing on music and discussing the sections within our dance. We have now edited all of our music together using 4 different pieces, The first being “The Chase” from the Stonehearst Asylum soundtrack. And in this lesson we focused deply on this section, which we have now added to the very beginning of our piece. This music is very dramatic and powerful, consisting of a strong repetitive melody with heavy and loud beats. I personally feel this music creates quite a frantic and scary feel. Within this section we used the chance method, here we all thought of a word in which we thought represented our image and created 2 movements based around it. We labelled each action from 1-6, and then rolled a dice which generated a new sequence of order that the actions would be performed in. Within this section we perform repetaive actions in a straight line travelling downstage. These moements are intense an...

Lesson 7 Choreography

In todays lesson we focused more on our group choreography. We began by reviewing the choreography we created in the previous lesson and then sat down to discuss music. After listening to a few different pieces we were drawn to the music “Prodigy” by Nathan Lanier as we felt it fit well with our stimulus creating a mysterious and creepy atmosphere, through the vocals which sing a repeated minor tune. The music also had a strong and powerful beat which was reflected throughout the piece. We are also going to mix this with a couple of other songs in which we are still yet to define. We listened to the beginning of the music and began to create material going in correlation with the piece. We start are dance with one dancer in the centre of the stage standing still with strong eye contact with the audience, as the music goes on, one by one the dancers slowly walk in keeping the eye focus forward to their place in the first diagonal in which the vocals come in and we perform a phrase i...

Lesson 6 choreography

In this lesson we began to develop our choreography piece. We started off by reviewing the material we created last lesson which lead us on to continue with the process of producing different formations. When thinking of ideas for new formations I personally find it helpful to draw little diagrams in my notebook, jotting down dots for the individual dancers and then creating different patterns such as diagonals, lines and triangles etc. Once we had thought of formations for the next two phrases, we then began to link the material together by creating transitions to make everything flow. When creating these transitions, we tried to make sure that every movement had a clear relationship towards our stimulus of mental asylums and the characteristics of people inside. We created one section in which we are kneeling on the floor in a triangle formation facing stage right where we sway back and forth with our head facing front and our eyes fixed on the audience almost as if we are in a tra...
