Choreography lesson 9
In today’s lesson we began by reviewing the feedback we received from our teacher based upon our choreography some of the points we were given included:
• During the triangle section try to find more ways to build movement so it becomes more exaggerated throughout, for example certain actions could be a lot sharper and deeper , we also need to ensure that we are all doing the same thing and if someone is doing something different intentionally we need to make it more obvious in order for the audience to not get the impression someone has gone wrong
• Throughout the piece use more breath and make sure to maintain our characters.
• Now we need to start rehearsing full out every time as the performance quality, facial expressions and intensity of movement is vital to the piece.
From this we began to work on our feedback by going through our dance slowly and applying any corrections we had been given. We made sure to go through every section in detail to ensure that we all knew what we were doing as well as making sure certain movements had that powerful and strong dynamic to help add to our piece. We also discussed our facial expressions, we talked about how we should maintain a strong fixed eyeline to make the audience feel intimidated by us and almost a little bit uncomfortable. Towards the end of our piece our storyline becomes more emotional and therefore we wanted to show a sense of sadness to highlight the fact that patients inside a mental asylum do have feelings and are not constantly out of control.
During this lesson we also worked on finishing our piece in which we managed to achieve. Our final piece of music is “I Giorni” by Ludovico Einaudi This music is a huge contrast to the music we selected at the beginning of our piece, reflecting a more emotional feel. This piece has a slow tempo and is played by a piano in a minor key portraying a sense of sadness, within this section we are linking our movement to the straitjacket which was a humane form of treatment that many asylums used including the pilgrim psychiatric centre. Here is an image that helped us get a better idea around this:
The straitjacket provided a restraint that the patient could not supply himself. It was an overgarment that trapped the arms together constraining an aggressive prisoner or patient. Within this section we demonstrate this idea by performing choreography with our arms attached together behind our backs, every now and then we release an arm to show the need for freedom, we portray a sense of sadness a s we can imagine how trapped and confined these patients must have felt using the straitjacket.
Having completed our piece, we will now work on cleaning our dance and refining any sections we may be unsure on.

This is a very detailed blog and you spoke about this weeks lesson really well. I really enjoyed watching your final draft of your piece and thought you all portrayed your characters well, how did you find performing your piece all the way through?
ReplyDeleteThank you for this comment Megan. I really enjoyed performing our piece all of the way through is it allowed us to see how our piece has finally come together. Due to the dance being 10 minuets long I did find that I lost some energy towards the end of the piece, therefore I need to work on this by making sure that I perform our dance full out every time we rehearse it in order to build up my stamina and not feel tired towards the end.
DeleteI've really enjoyed reading about how you are applying your feedback and how you aim to improve your dance over the next week! Have you found receiving feedback helpful? If so, why? What positive feedback did you receive?
ReplyDeleteThank you Mhairi. Yes i have found receiving feedback really helpful as it allows us to get someone else's observation upon our work and what improvements they feel we could make in order to make our piece better as a whole. I think both positive and negative feedback is extremely important as it allows us to make any little changes and correct certain movements before we perform our final work, and positive feedback allows us to be pleased with what we have and makes us realise what we could include more of. Some of the positive feedback we were given was that our teacher enjoyed watching the shoulder roll contract section and how it repeats.
DeleteYou have applied your feedback which is a key step in perfecting your work and I have enjoyed watching your progression over the weeks. What do you plan to do as a group to prepare for the final performance?
ReplyDeleteThank you Eloisa. To plan for our final performance as a group we have decided that during our rehearsal time we will slowly go through our piece cleaning through our movements making sure that everyone knows what they are doing as well as applying any feedback we have received from our teacher and fellow class mates. We have also decided to dedicate one lesson towards discussing our facial expressions and narrative of our piece in order for us all to get a better and clearer understanding.
