Lesson 6 choreography

In this lesson we began to develop our choreography piece. We started off by reviewing the material we created last lesson which lead us on to continue with the process of producing different formations. When thinking of ideas for new formations I personally find it helpful to draw little diagrams in my notebook, jotting down dots for the individual dancers and then creating different patterns such as diagonals, lines and triangles etc. Once we had thought of formations for the next two phrases, we then began to link the material together by creating transitions to make everything flow. When creating these transitions, we tried to make sure that every movement had a clear relationship towards our stimulus of mental asylums and the characteristics of people inside. We created one section in which we are kneeling on the floor in a triangle formation facing stage right where we sway back and forth with our head facing front and our eyes fixed on the audience almost as if we are in a tra...

Lesson 5 choreography

In this lesson we began to work further on our group piece for the choreography assessment. We discussed different beginning, middles and ends for our dance to help generate some different starting points. For example, we thought that our piece could begin with one dancer standing center stage slowly swaying back and forth performing small gestures and then each dancer would slowly walk in maintaining eye contact with the audience. Our piece would gradually build up to become more frantic symbolising the idea of how some people in mental asylums are unpredictable and sometimes are hard to control. We also came up with a plan for our ending in which we thought all dancers could be performing in unison and then slowly one by one filter out leaving one dancer to continue and then suddenly drop to her knees to create a sudden shock towards the audiences. The music would then go silent whist the other dancers crowd around her heavily breathing. Next, we thought of a series of different w...

Lesson 3 Choreography

In our third choreography lesson we completed a translation task. We lined up vertically in our groups with the person at the front facing forward and the other dancers facing away, The first person is given a word by the teacher for example sticky, itchy, gentle or boom ect, and then they have to come up with a short phrase best representing their allocated word. Next the second person would turn around to face the dancer at the front and they would have two chances to try and learn the 1st persons choreography to then teach whatever they managed to pick up to the final dancer, who gets one chance to learn it. After we compared the last persons phrase to the original motif to see how different or similar, they were. We repeated this 3 times allowing each person to create their own choreography based of a different word given by the teacher leaving us with 6 different phrases, 3 being the original choreography of each person and 3 being the choreography the last person managed to lea...

Lesson 4 choreography

In this Choreography lesson we moved into our new groups to discuss upon our idea for our assessment piece. As a group we have decided to create our dance around the idea of mental asylums and the different characteristics of people living their day to day lives inside. To generate this idea, we looked at different pictures linked to the idea of mental asylums and were drawn to the one shown below which has become a starting point for our work. We feel this photo is interesting as you can interpretate it in different ways. A very eerie atmosphere is given from this picture presenting a scary and uncomfortable feel as it almost looks like an abandoned corridor. When researching we came across one of the world’s most famous mental asylums named the Pilgrim psychiatric centre which was created in 1929 by Dr Charles W. Pilgrim. We also investigated a few individuals that were at the pilgrim centre for example Baylah Jones who was a patient at the hospital who claims she heard voice...

Lesson 1 and 2 choreography

In our first choreography lesson we began by reviewing different stimuli that had been dotted around the room based upon political art protests, here are a couple of pictures we were given to annotate: In groups we made our way round to each stimulus writing down any thoughts or feelings, as well as what we thought the artist was trying to portray through their work. As we got to the last few photos, we found it harder to think of new ideas due to previous groups writing down similar thoughts. Once we had completed this task, as a class we discussed each stimulus in detail comparing the different opinions and concepts each group had come up with. Next, in our groups we chose one picture to create a short motif upon, here is the picture we chose: we felt this photo portrayed a wall dividing different classes of people who want to be in union yet are forced to be apart. In the Picture we noticed that one side was clean and tidy and the other dirty and cluttered with peop...
