Lesson 1 and 2 choreography

In our first choreography lesson we began by reviewing different stimuli that had been dotted around the room based upon political art protests, here are a couple of pictures we were given to annotate:
In groups we made our way round to each stimulus writing down any thoughts or feelings, as well as what we thought the artist was trying to portray through their work. As we got to the last few photos, we found it harder to think of new ideas due to previous groups writing down similar thoughts. Once we had completed this task, as a class we discussed each stimulus in detail comparing the different opinions and concepts each group had come up with. Next, in our groups we chose one picture to create a short motif upon, here is the picture we chose:
we felt this photo portrayed a wall dividing different classes of people who want to be in union yet are forced to be apart. In the Picture we noticed that one side was clean and tidy and the other dirty and cluttered with people, which could perhaps portray the two opposite classes. From this, within our phrase we begin as one trio performing calm and gentle actions in unison leading on to two of us splitting apart and one person acting as a wall keeping us away from each other by building a barrier separating the two dancers. In our second lesson each group in the class had to bring in a stimulus of their own based upon whatever they wanted, from this again, similar to the previous task we went around and wrote down any thoughts or feelings we felt the picture/objects portrayed. As we got round to each stimulus, I found it interesting to see different people’s perceptions and thoughts towards each picture/object. Here is the photo we chose as a stimulus:
We were drawn to this picture as we felt there is a lot you can depict from it, for example you could link it to the idea of DNA and the information displaying someone’s personal individual details. You can also see lots of different patterns, shapes and pathways as well as links between all the lines within the hand. After we had completed this task we came together as a class and discussed each stimulus picking out individual words in which we felt the pictures/objects portrayed. From this, in our groups we had to choose 3 words from any of the annotated stimulus. We chose the words Contrast, different pathways and intertwining, with this we created 4 movements of at maximum 8 counts for each word meaning we would have 12 actions in total. For example, for the word contrast we focused deeply on displaying different dynamics such as soft and sharp to clearly show this word within our movement. After we had created our different actions, we labelled each one from 1 to 12. Our teacher then rolled a dice presenting us with an order of numbers, This was now the order of our movements , some movements had to be repeated due to the dice rolling certain numbers twice, however this added affect to our piece using the choreographic device repetition. We added all the actions together creating transitions for the in between sections. And then finally we chose a number from 1-4 which decided what piece of music our dance would be performed to. We chose 3 so therefore our work was to the music “Legions” (war) by Zoe Keating. I enjoyed this task as it allowed me to find a new technique to help with the process of creating choreography. I found it interesting as it was not something I would have thought of doing before when trying to create movement, however I feel I will really benefit using this method if I am struggling to create choreography in the future. 1. I think it is really impressive how you portrayed your initial interpretation of the first stimulus through the dynamic of your movement and rather than depicting an imaginary wall, you used a dancer to physically represent that barrier. How did you find being randomly assigned music for your second stimulus - did you have to make an changes to the dynamic of your movement to fit the music, or did you want to create a contrast between the two?

    1. Thank you Daisy. I actually enjoyed being assigned random music as it almost gave an element of surprise. When we first listened to the music we tested performing our piece to it and luckily it fitted well. There were a couple of aspects that needed to be changed such as certain actions that didn't quite go in time with the music but other than that it worked well. I also feel that once we had listened to the music it helped us to develop the dynamics of our choreography better as we could relate them to the heaviness of the piece as well as highlighting any accents.

  2. I really enjoyed reading about all of your different interpretations for your chosen stimuli and found it fascinating the way you interpreted the idea of all the lines in the hand being linked. When your teacher rolled the dice to generate a new order of numbers, did you find it difficult to create transitions between the movements especially as you didn't know what music you would be given?

    1. Thank you Lucy. I did find it quite difficult to create transitions as we found some phrases were tricky to link to the next due to them not smoothly going together, however I enjoyed the process of the dice method as it really made you think of different ways to connect each phrase in a flowing way. It was especially challenging as we had not yet heard the music we would be performing our piece to, so therefore we were uncertain of the dynamics as we wanted to make sure they linked to the music. Although we overcame this as when we heard the music we were able to adapt any dynamics/actions in order for everything to move along smoothly.

  3. I love the fact you have included pictures of all the stimuli which were explored in the first lesson. You have explored the tasks from the two lessons in great detail. I was really drawn to the detail and the way in which you interpreted the stimulus, of the hand. Would you further the movements you developed from this into something you could use in your end choreography piece?

    1. Thank you Abi. Yes I feel in ways I could adapt and use aspects of the movement material we created during this task within our group piece. I feel some of the dynamic and strong actions would link well to our chosen stimulus of mental asylums showing different characteristics of the people inside and how they are at times not in control with themselves both physically and mentally.

  4. This is a very detailed and interesting blog, I like how you have incorporated images of the stimuli for a better understanding. You spoke about how as a class you talked about the stimuli, how did you find this task? And did anyone’s views on the stimuli make you see it differently?

    1. Thank you Megan. I find it really interesting when we gather together and discuss our different thoughts and feelings as a class upon each stimulus, as everyone has such individual ideas and feelings in which perhaps didn't come across to me when i was observing the pictures. So I think it is important to hear other peoples views and opinions as you are able to take inspiration from them and maybe look at the stimuli in a different way.

  5. You have described the task with great detail and I enjoyed your interpretation of the exercises set. How do you think you will develop these ideas for your group choreography

    1. Thank you for this comment. I enjoyed this task and found it helpful looking at a range of different pictures to generate stimulus ideas. I feel that when looking for a stimulus for our group choreography, it will be useful to look at different pictures in which can perhaps become a starting point for our dance.
