Lesson 3 Choreography

In our third choreography lesson we completed a translation task. We lined up vertically in our groups with the person at the front facing forward and the other dancers facing away, The first person is given a word by the teacher for example sticky, itchy, gentle or boom ect, and then they have to come up with a short phrase best representing their allocated word. Next the second person would turn around to face the dancer at the front and they would have two chances to try and learn the 1st persons choreography to then teach whatever they managed to pick up to the final dancer, who gets one chance to learn it. After we compared the last persons phrase to the original motif to see how different or similar, they were. We repeated this 3 times allowing each person to create their own choreography based of a different word given by the teacher leaving us with 6 different phrases, 3 being the original choreography of each person and 3 being the choreography the last person managed to learn which in some cases was slightly different to the first. Now we put all the individual phrases together to create a piece of choreography adding in transitions. we also added choreographic devices such as repetition and canon which overall made our piece more interesting to watch. As well as this we added different dynamics to make our piece more effective for example in one of the original phrases we added sharp aspects to some of the movements and then in the different phrase we made it a lot smoother and performed the actions with a gentler approach. Here is a video of our finished project. https://youtu.be/2RFGUgVJacM I really enjoyed this task as I liked how we all had our individual choreography within the piece and I also found the process interesting as it was a fun and different way to create movement which then joined together to create a whole dance. I will use this process again if I am struggling to create choreography during our group project as it turned out to be a quick and effective method.

  1. You have structured this blog very well with great detail about the task. I like how you attached the video of the finished piece, it looks very good and gives us a better understanding of what the movement was. Was there anything you found challenging about this task?

    1. Thank you Megan. Overall I did enjoy this task and it was an effective method to help with creating choreography. During the task I found it quite challenging to remember every detail of the choreography taught by the girl in front of me as we only got a couple of chances to learn it. I also found adding in transitions a bit of a challenge as we had to ensure that all of the different phrases flowed seamlessly.

  2. I really liked watching the phrase you created and it is clear to see the choreographic devices you used, dynamics and change in direction! If you were to do the task again, is there any other devices you would use?

    1. Thank you for this comment. Yes I would maybe try to use a few more different choreographic devices if we had to do the task again, such as repetition and canon as well as the devices we used within our original piece to give a wide variety making our choreography more interesting.

  3. You described the task well and your phrase was really interesting. Why do you feel you wouldn't start your choreography using this method?

    1. Thank you. I actually found this method quite effective and feel as though I would perhaps use it again in the future when creating choreography. However this method in particular can be quite time consuming so therefore maybe it would be easier to use a more quick method when needing to create choreography at a fast pace, but on the other hand if you have a long period of time to create material then i feel it would be very useful.
