Lesson 8 choreography
In todays lesson we continued on with our group choreography creating more material, focusing on music and discussing the sections within our dance.
We have now edited all of our music together using 4 different pieces, The first being “The Chase” from the Stonehearst Asylum soundtrack. And in this lesson we focused deply on this section, which we have now added to the very beginning of our piece. This music is very dramatic and powerful, consisting of a strong repetitive melody with heavy and loud beats. I personally feel this music creates quite a frantic and scary feel. Within this section we used the chance method, here we all thought of a word in which we thought represented our image and created 2 movements based around it. We labelled each action from 1-6, and then rolled a dice which generated a new sequence of order that the actions would be performed in.
Within this section we perform repetaive actions in a straight line travelling downstage. These moements are intense and powerful and the use of repetition portrays the idea of how we are not in control of ourselves and its almost as I we are stuck in a trance. This whole section also links to the picture we found at the beginning of this process of the dark corridor in which we used as a starting point:
We thought this section could show us walking down the corridor making our way into the mental asylum where we become trapped and stuck inside our minds. Every now and then there is a slow part within in the music where we perform calm actions leaing apart from one another which then leads as to sharply snap back into our straight line to again perform the repeated actions in unison, this demonstrates the idea that we are all stuck in this trance together.
Towards the end of this section the music slowly fades out quietly into our next piece “Prodigy” by Nathan Lanier.
Below is the movement we created for the beginning of our dance:
Next we moved on to creating material towards the end of our dance. Here me, Sadie and Hannah worked on our trio. The music for our trio is “Primavera” by Ludovico Einaudi. This piece is a big contrast to the rest of our dance as it is of a slow tempo played in a minor key. We decided to base our trio off the idea of supporting one another, here we realise that we must come together in order to get better. I feel this section shows that we are real human beings and that we are not always out of control due to our mental state. Here we perform gentle and soft movements using moments of contact to show the idea of supporting one another.

I really enjoyed reading this blog and seeing how your choreography is developing. I also like how you have included the chance method in your piece. You also spoke about how your trio music contrasts to the group music, how do you think will come across to the audience? And how will you portray the soft and gentle movements?
ReplyDeleteThank you for this comment Megan. I feel that the sudden contrast in music will effect the audience as the majority of our piece is very strong and dynamic reflecting how we are out of control, however in the trio section the music is a lot slower almost creating a feeling of sadness. Here our movement is gentle and calm allowing the audience to see our emotion and support for one another.
DeleteI really enjoyed watching your work and thought that your use of the soft gentle movements contrasted to the quicker more explosive movements really emphasised the dynamics. You seem to be progressing very well on your piece, what are your next steps?
ReplyDeleteThank you for this comment Ella. Yes we are very happy with our choreography so far and aim to have 10 minuets by the end of the week , Therefore now we need to work on our ending, creating more material in order for us to go over and clean our dance refining any /sections and applying any corrections/feedback we have been given.
DeleteIt's very interesting to read about the choices you have made regarding the start of your piece, I can really see how it links to the stimulus which will be really effective. What do you want the audience to feel in this section?
ReplyDeleteThank you for this comment. I feel this beginning section is very dramatic and powerful due to the strong dynamic gestures we perform. Within this section we want the audience to feel slightly uncomfortable due to our direct eyeline and sharp repetitive movements. This section shows us entering the mental asylum and walking down the corridor beginning our journey, Therefore we want the audience to feel a connection towards our characters right from the beginning.
